God is sovereign and can do anything. We cannot limit God. However, are the special revelations and prophecies given by modern day prophets really from God? How to test that it is from God?
If God reveals something, it will happen. Most prophecies given by modern day prophets do not come to pass. According to the Bible, one of the ways to know that a prophet is from God is that their prophecy doesn't fail. You may ask, "Didn't Jonah's prophecy about Nineveh fail? Didn't God change his mind?". The answer is "No". Jonah's prophecy did not fail, because, in Old Testament times, the people were under the law which said,"And if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it. (Jeremiah 18:8-20)".
If a prophecy is from God, it will be clear and specific. Most modern prophets today give vague prophecies like, "there will be earthquaques in Japan", "there will be natural calamities in most part of the world", "there will be psunami in Indonesia" etc. Everyone who watches news knows that earthquaques in Japan and Psunami in Indonesia happen often. And they don't specify any date or time or month. And if they do specify it, it doesn't come to pass and they say that God has changed his mind because of their prayers:-).
If a prophecy is from God, it must be in line with the Word of God. "What sayeth the scriptures?" should be the first question to ask whenever an extra-biblical revelation is given.
